Daniel WanzenbergChief Investment Officer
Mr. Wanzenberg’s 28-year career has focused on evaluating investment firms and their strategies and constructing multi-manager solutions for wealthy families and institutions.
In 2005, Mr. Wanzenberg launched the North American global multi-manager program for ABN AMRO, an international bank based in the Netherlands. As Head of the group, he was responsible for overseeing the program including manager due diligence and selection and constructing client portfolios.
In this role, it became evident that his clients were being negatively affected by the blending of multi-manager portfolios in the name of diversification. When client solutions were viewed “in aggregate”, the solutions correlated too highly with an index fund to be presented as an “active management” solution. This was due to each separate manager’s overall strategy moving very similarly with one-another (common correlation), resulting in a lack of overall Active Share—essentially causing clients to pay an active management fee for a passive portfolio.
This led to further research of each manager’s portfolios separately, looking for pockets of consistent alpha generation. The research revealed that long-term outperforming managers tended to consistently produce most of their outperformance in a limited number of sectors. His team began to reimagine how client solutions could be constructed by blending multiple managers’ alpha generating sectors, referred to as “alpha building blocks”, into unique client solutions.
The approach he developed led to the formation of Wanzenberg Partners, LLC in 2009 (DBA APS Labs) and, in 2023, its strategies and assets were acquired by Moody Aldrich Partners, LLC (MAP).
He earned a B.A. from University of Iowa and started his career as a performance analyst at Nuveen Asset Management. He joined Envestnet at its founding in 2000, to build their investment manager platform. From 2007–2023, Mr Wanzenberg served as Head of the Investment Committee at The Coleman Foundation responsible for overseeing its $200 million portfolio.
